Description

Kenya, known officially as the Republic of Kenya (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Kenya), is a nation that graces the eastern part of Africa. It spans 580,367 square kilometers (224,081 square miles), positioning it as the 48th largest country in the world by total area. As of the 2019 census, Kenya's population exceeded 47.6 million, making it the 29th most populous country globally. The country's vibrant capital and largest city is Nairobi, with Mombasa, its oldest city and initial capital, being the second largest and located along the coast. The third-largest city, Kisumu, serves as an inland port on Lake Victoria. Other significant urban areas include Nakuru and Eldoret. By 2020, Kenya emerged as the third-largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa, trailing behind Nigeria and South Africa.

Kenya shares its borders with South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Uganda to the west, Tanzania to the south, and is edged by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. The country showcases a rich diversity in geography, climate, and population. This diversity ranges from the chilly peaks of Mount Kenya (including Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana) surrounded by extensive forests and wildlife, to the fertile agricultural landscapes, and temperate climates found in the western and Rift Valley counties. The nation also spans arid and semi-arid terrains and even absolute deserts like the Chalbi Desert and Nyiri Desert, depicting the vast environmental contrast within its borders.
